For outdoor pursuits, the Costa Blanca is heaven on earth. With its ideal climate and spectacular scenery it's hardly surprising that sun-seekers, sports-minded people and adventurers flock here to enjoy a wealth of activities amidst these glorious surroundings - and with world-class facilities in abundance and a holiday atmosphere that is second to none, outdoor living doesn't get any better than this.
The more famous resort towns of Alicante , Torrevieja and Benidorm are living proof that everything you do on a holiday can become an outdoor pursuit. Life revolves around the glorious beaches, and you could easily spend all your time here working on your tan, cooling off from time to time in the glistening waters of the Mediterranean, and enjoying the unique experience of the Costa Blanca's fabulous open-air cafés, bars and restaurants.
These towns also have an unparalleled atmosphere for water sports. Water-skiing and windsurfing are ever-popular, and there's jet-skiing, scuba-diving and much else besides for the more adventurous. Back on land there's a host of tennis, squash and golfing facilities, plus a stylish social scene that loves to get around on roller-blades and cycles. The evenings are no less an outdoor affair, with the coast's bars and clubs making the most of the balmy summer nights.
Head to the quieter coastal towns of Calpe , Altea and
Jávea and you'll be able to plunge into a world of outdoor activities
with a distinctly Spanish touch. Spend a day fishing in a secluded cove, sail a
yacht from village to village, or try a little snorkelling out on the reef.
It's also well worth exploring the countryside behind the coastline, with a
network of hiking and horse-riding trails that will lead you to the wealth of
breathtaking vantage points and historical sights that the coast has to offer.
Paella
is the Costa Blanca's principal culinary claim to fame, and the variations on
this popular dish are vast. Snail and chicken paella has long been a Valencian
favourite, though seafood paellas and squid paella, complete with black
ink-stained rice, also feature on many menus. Valencian 'horchata', a
refreshing drink made from ground tiger nuts, is good to sip in the shade of a
traditional taverna, and when in Alicante be sure to try 'arroz con costra' (a
meat based paella smothered in egg). International cuisine is easy to come in
all of the Costa Blanca's major resorts, and Benidorm boasts one of Spain 's
greatest concentrations of British-style eateries and bars.
Valencia and Alicante are home to the Costa Blanca's more established restaurants, and both are dotted with tavernas that offer traditional Spanish cuisine and local speciality dishes. The concentration of bars and restaurants in Benidorm is intense, so you'll never be short of a new place and style of food to sample. Gandia and Denia are also happy hunting grounds for those with an appetite for both Spanish and international cuisines, and anyone with a car is but a drive away from the quieter and more traditional restaurants of quieter towns like Xativa and Altea.
There are hundreds of beaches in Costa Blanca. Some slope gently and are thronged with people; others are tucked away in coves beneath spectacular cliffs, assuring all the privacy and tranquility of a desert island.
